Controversial Advert That Caused A Stir Amongst Kenyans

Sometimes the mind meanders when it gets a glimpse of something and shows you a whole different perspective of an issue you thought you had resolved.

That is exactly what happened to me this morning. I was at the salon getting my hair fixed and Easy FM was the station tuned. I can’t remember the specifics of the conversation Munene (the radio presenter) was having but it took me back to the advert that was airing on the Kenyan TV stations a few weeks back.

The advert theme was “Weka Condom Mpangoni”. It featured a lady (lady number one) who meets her friend (lady number two) at the market they start discussing about lady number one’s husband. Lady number one has nothing good to say of her sorry case of her hubby and lady number two asks about her side-kick; whereby lady number one responds amidst giggles. Then lady number two advices her friend to remember to use a condom in her shenanigans. You can view the clip here.

The video caused so much controversy amongst different individuals it was banned from airing.

But the fact is; statistics show that most people spreading and getting infected with the HIV virus are married (point to ponder upon). I for a fact was against the airing of the video. It goes against every bone in my body and my beliefs too. But was that the best way to deal with the issue?

The human tendency usually upon confrontation with the truth; we tend to push it further or even ignore it. No one likes to face controversies. No one likes being questioned. No one likes to move out of their comfort area. People like an easy life; where everything is sunshine and roses. We forget it’s during the winter beneath the bitter cold ice lies a seed that with the coming of the spring and the tender kisses of the sun becomes a rose.

I do not yet have a solution on how to deal with the problem (infidelity). But all my life I have been taught once you make that decision to get married; it shouldn’t come from a whim of the moment. Love fades, we’ve all experienced that. But when you say those vows, you should mean it. And if you are a person of integrity, you’ll follow through with the vows you said. The grass is always greener where it is watered. If you think the relationship between you and your side-kick is better than your relationship with your significant other; then that is where you are watering your grass.
